Botanical descriptions :

Habit : Shrub to small trees, up to 10 m.
Branches and Branchlets : Branchlets zigzag, ferruginous tomentose when young.
Leaves : Leaves simple, alternate, distichous; petiole 0.1-0.2 cm long, semiterete; lamina 4-8 x 1.5-2.5 cm, oblong-lanceolate, apex acute to gradually acuminate, base acute to rounded, chartaceous, granulate beneath; midrib and secondary_nerves impressed above; secondary_nerves 4-6 pairs, ascending; tertiary_nerves obscure.
Inflorescence / Flower : Flowers extra-axillary or leaf opposed.
Fruit and Seed : Cluster of 1-seeded berries, globose or ovoid.

Ecology :

Understorey tree in evergreen forests between 700 and 1300 m.

Distribution :

Endemic to the Western_Ghats- Agasthyamalai Hills in South Sahyadri.

Status :

Endangered (IUCN, 2000).
