Botanical descriptions :

Habit : Small trees, up to 7 m tall.
Trunk & Bark : Bark corky, yellow when scrap; blaze reddish.
Branches and Branchlets : Branchlets subterete, glabrous.
Leaves : Leaves simple, opposite, decussate; stipules caducous; petiole 0.3-0.8 cm long, planoconvex in cross section, glabrous; lamina 5-11 x 2-4.3 cm elliptic or narrow elliptic, apex bluntly acuminate, sometimes obtusely acute, base cuneate, margin entire, glabrous, smooth shining above, chartaceous or subcoriaceous; midrib raised above; secondary_nerves 4-5 pairs, not prominent beneath; tertiary_nerves obscure.
Inflorescence / Flower : Inflorescence 1-3 flowered axillary cymes; flowers red; petals fimbriate.
Fruit and Seed : Capsule, valves deeply obcordate; seeds 1-2 per cell.

Ecology :

Generally understorey trees in low elevation wet evergreen forests, between 200 and 500 m.

Distribution :

Endemic to the Western_Ghats- common in Central Sahyadri and rare in South Sahyadri.
